My son loves every KEEN event - the regular sessions, the family fun day, you name it - because, for that time period, he has a friend. KEEN gives people with disabilities the friendship they so desire but can't obtain on their own. ” – KEEN parent

All of KEEN's programs are based on a single principle: pair a trained volunteer with an athlete and let them discover together how much they can do. Programs are all open and unstructured, allowing athletes facing significant challenges to have fun and be successful.

KEEN New York currently offers Sports and Arts & Crafts programs in Manhattan and the Bronx, a Swim program in Manhattan, a Basketball program in Brooklyn and a Teen Basketball program in Manhattan.

BROOKLYN BASKETBALL - in Collaboration with our Partners at
Extreme Kids & Crew

KEEN New York's Brooklyn Basketball is an indoor program for our athletes who wish to shoot some hoops, practice their ball-handling skills, and finesse their footwork all in a team setting. During the program, athletes and volunteers come together for one-to-one activities. They have a group warm up, and then volunteer coaches help each athlete practice exercises and drills. The session ends with everyone coming together in a circle and sharing with the group what they did that day "that made them very Proud" (followed closely by a round of Hot Potato!).

TEEN BASKETBALL - in Collaboration with our Partners at Assist NYC

KEEN New York's Teen Basketball program is for our older athletes who wish to improve their basketball skills in a team setting. Designed by former collegiate basketball players, this program runs over 8 consecutive weeks and each hour is packed full with a group warm up, passing/dribbling/shooting drills and fun! The session ends with each athlete showcasing what they learned that day along with our usual "Prouds" circle.

SPORTS

During the Sports Program, athletes and volunteers come together for one-to-one activities. They have a group warm up, and then move to individual activities which are tailored solely to the needs of the athlete. They may throw a basketball or kick a soccer ball. Many love to bounce on 36” balls or be pulled along the floor on a flat wheeled scooter. A group may form for Duck, Duck, Goose. The session ends with everyone coming together in a circle (although some athletes still need to run around its periphery, and that’s okay) and sharing with the group what they did that day “that made them very Proud" and relay races! Athletes burn energy, meet and interact with new volunteers, see old friends, and then rejoin their parents, who have had some precious respite time.

ARTS & CRAFTS

During the Arts & Crafts Program, athletes and volunteers come together for one-to-one activities. Depending on the child's ability, they can color in coloring books or on construction paper, make friendship bracelets, or create a masterpiece with pom poms, feathers, stickers...whatever materials are available to bring their imagination to life!

KEEN Sports  and Arts & Crafts programs meet on select Saturdays and are open to athletes ages 5-21. Programs are held at:

SWIM

This program meets on select Saturdays and is open to athletes ages 5-21. KEEN Swim brings the KEEN formula to the pool. A large variety of inflatable equipment makes even the most cautious athlete eager to get in the water and splash about. Swimmers who are able are encouraged to swim a lap or two.

KEEN Swim is held at:
